AlB2 is the chemical formula of this binary compound, which is formed from aluminum and boran. Aluminum diboride has a red color under normal pressure and temperature.
Aluminum boride (also known as AlB12) is one of two compounds containing aluminum and boran. AlB12 has a specific weight of 2,55 (18degC) and is a monoclinic, shiny black crystal. It is insoluble with water, alkali or acid. Nitric acid hot decomposes it. It is produced by melting together boron, sulfur, and aluminum.
The structure is similar to that of magnesium diboride. The metallic conductivity of single crystals of aluminium diboride is parallel to the hexagonal surface of the substrate.
