Boron-10 is an isotope of boron with five protons and five neutrons; it is represented on the periodic table by 10B. It is found naturally in the earth’s crust and oceans, and in many minerals such as borax, colemanite, and kernite. It is also used as a neutron capture therapy agent to treat cancer.

Boron is a nonmetal that is relatively electron-deficient and has a vacant p-orbital; therefore, it is able to bond readily with electron-rich substances. As a result, compounds of boron usually behave as Lewis acids and easily accept electrons into covalent bonds. Unlike most metals, boron is also the least electronegative nonmetal, which means it is prone to oxidation in air or in moist air.

The most common method for preparing elemental boron is reduction of boric oxide with magnesium or aluminium. This produces boron powder, which is then purified by several methods including zone refining and sublimation, or by chemical purification. Pure boron for semiconductor applications is often obtained by the Czochralski process.

Boron-10 is widely used in nuclear medicine and has potential applications in nanotechnology, materials science, energy storage, and catalysis.
